כולנו מכירים את היצור המיתולוגי חד קרן, היצור המיתולוגי שנטען כי נדיר ויפה כל כך. בעולם הסטרט-אפים וההשקעות חדי קרן הם חברות שכבר הגיעו לשווי של מיליארד דולר, אך הם עדיין בבעלות המשקיעים הפרטיים לפני האקזיט או ההנפקה.
מקור השם הוא בבלוג הטכנולי טקקראנצ', אז איילין לי, שותפה ומייסדת בקרן ההון סיכון מעמק הסיליקון קאובוי ונצ'רס, פרסמה פוסט בכותרת ""ברוכים הבאים למועדון חדי הקרן: לומדים מחברות מיליארד הדולר", אז – ב-2013 ריכזה 39 חברות בשווי זה לפני הנפקה ונתנה להן את השם. יש לציין שב-2013 היו הרבה פחות חברות כאלו, ואכן היו נדירות למדי.
אם ב-2013 היה מדובר בעשרות חברות, ב-2019 הן כבר הגיעו ל-300 חברות, ב-2018 לבדה נכנסו כמעט 100 חברות סיניות. בשנים האחרונות הצטרפו גם סטארט-אפים ישראליים כמו monday, טראקס הישראלית-סינגפוורית ולייטריקס. כולן נכנסו למועדון השנה.
חברות חד הקרן מכוונות פחות להנפקות ויותר למשקיעים פרטיים, כי הרבה כסף זורם בשוק המחפש חברות טכנולוגיה וכך הזינוקים גדולים הרבה יותר מבשוק הציבורי. הכסף הרב שזורם להייטק מאפשר לחברות למשוך עוד זמן ולגייס כסף עד ההנפקה.
אחד המכשולים של חברות חד הקרן הוא שהעובדים תקועים במקומות העבודה שלהם כי הנה אוטוטו ההנפקה או האקזיט.
